The HP Media Smart EX495 share the unique photo management feature of HP NAS servers, which is the Web-based Photo Publisher application, which can be launched from the HP Media Smart Server Control Center. The features allows for uploading photos stored on the NAS directly to popular photo-sharing sites including Snapfish, Flickr, Picasa, and Facebook. The EX495 comes with 1.5TB of storage and three empty bays for another three SATA hard drives. The EX495 also comes with excellent backup solutions.

The EX495 server is consistently faster than most NAS servers and is comparable to most USB external hard drives. This is impressive as typically direct-attached external hard drives are faster than any network storage devices. Uptill now the Media Smart EX495 Server have proved to be the second fastest NAS server.

An ink cartridge of the present invention has a storage element, in which plural pieces of specific information relating to an ink cartridge are stored at specific addresses having predetermined data lengths. For example, a piece of information on the year of manufacture is registered in a data length of 7 bits, a piece of information on the month of manufacture is registered in a data length of 4 bits, and a piece of information on the date of manufacture is registered in a data length of 5 bits. A piece of information on the time (hour) of manufacture is registered in a data length of 5 bits, and a piece of information on the time (minute) of manufacture is registered in a data length of 6 bits. The technique of the present invention determines whether the storage element incorporated in the ink cartridge is normal or abnormal, based on the piece of information on the month of manufacture. This arrangement ensures the easy and adequate determination of whether or not the information stored in the storage element is destroyed.

The cheap HP LaserJet 1320 includes both a contemporary USB 2.0 port and an old-fashioned parallel port. The HP LaserJet 1320 merits applause for including a feature that’s rare in such a small machine: its built-in duplexer lets you print on both sides of a page without making you flip over the sheets one by one. Given that the advent of e-mail and the Internet have ironically created more paper waste, duplexers are a cost-effective, environmentally friendly must-have for any office. The HP LaserJet 1320 includes 16MB of RAM, which you can expand to 144MB. The Laser Jet 1320 has two control languages HP PCL 5e and HP PCL 6 for basic printing tasks and PostScript Level 2 emulation for users who create or work with more complex desktop-publishing and graphics documents.

Text became faint and spidery at 2.5- and 3-point font sizes, yet the letters didn’t glob together. The text looked excellent at normal, readable sizes. At the default setting of 600x600dpi, grayscale-graphics test document produced impressively smooth, evenly stepped shading from dark to light.

Disclosed is an ink cartridge for an ink-jet image forming apparatus. The ink cartridge comprises an ink cartridge body having a plurality of ink chambers. The ink chambers are formed by two or more partitioning walls orthogonally intersected with each other within the ink cartridge body. A nose is formed at a position adjacent to the bottom surfaces of the ink chambers. The nose includes openings formed in the opposite sides and a plurality of ink feeding channels forming the central area between the openings and connected to the ink feeding channels, respectively. Sealing members seal each corresponding one of the nose openings.

This attractive laser printer measures 12.7 inches tall by 15.9 inches wide by 25.9 inches deep. This printer is not easy to move as it weigh about 50 pound. The front control panel houses a small two-line black lit LCD for alerts and toner level graphics, a left and right directional pad, a cancel button, and two LEDs to alerts users of low toner and print errors. All of the ports necessary to connect the printer to a computer are on the back of the device, including the power plug, a USB port, and an Ethernet jack for wired networking among several computers. HP contains a black and color laser print cartridges in the box. A black cartridge with a 3,500-page life span costs $123, while the color version is $121 for 2,800 pages. The HP is quick to print color text and color graphics at 8.31 and 13.56 pages per minute respectively.

The cheap CP2025n makes a more consistent argument for compelling output quality rather than speed. Both black graphics and color spectrums of this cheap printer appear to be solid and well formed with crisp lineation and clean edges. As expected, the black toner produces slightly more visually appealing text in smaller fonts than the color toner, but this printer remains true to the quality we expect from a professional laser.

1. A printer, to which an ink cartridge having a storage unit is detachably attached, the printer comprising: a reading unit reading a piece of ink related information indicating a month of manufacture of the ink cartridge, wherein the piece of information has been registered in advance in a predetermined format, from the storage unit; and a decision unit identifying whether the read-out piece of ink related information satisfies the predetermined format, so as to determine whether the storage unit is normal or whether the storage unit is not normal if the read-out piece of ink related information has been destroyed, wherein the predetermined format is four-bit data, and the decision unit determines that the storage unit is not normal when the ink-related information has a predetermined value.

2. A printer according to claim 1, wherein the predetermined value is one of 0000 and 1111.

3. A method of determining whether a storage unit included in an ink cartridge is normal, wherein the ink cartridge is configured to be detachably attached to a printer, the method comprising the steps of: (a) reading a piece of ink related information indicating a month of manufacture of the ink cartridge that has been registered in advance in a predetermined format, from the storage unit; and (b) identifying whether the read-out piece of ink related information satisfies the predetermined format, so as to determine whether the storage unit is normal or whether the storage unit is not normal if the read-out piece of ink related information has been destroyed, wherein the predetermined format is four-bit data, and the identifying step determines that the storage unit is not normal when the ink-related information has a predetermined value.

4. A method according to claim 3, wherein the predetermined value is one of 0000 and 1111.

5. A computer readable recording medium, on which a specific computer program is recorded, the specific computer program being used to determine whether a storage unit is normal, wherein the storage unit is included in an ink cartridge that is detachably attached to a printer, the specific computer program comprising: a program code that causes a computer to read a piece of ink related information indicating a month of manufacture of the ink cartridge, wherein the piece of ink related information has been registered in advance in a predetermined format, from the storage unit; a program code that causes the computer to identify whether the read-out piece of ink related information satisfies the predetermined format; and a program code that causes the computer to determine that the storage unit is not normal in the case where the read-out piece of ink related information does not satisfy the predetermined format if the read-out piece of ink related information has been destroyed, wherein the predetermined format is four-bit data, and the computer code causes the computer to determine that the storage unit is not normal when the ink-related information has a predetermined value.

The Photosmart C5280 uses a two ink cartridges: one black and one tricolor. The black cartridge can be swapped out for an optional tricolor photo tank for six-color photo printing. Black text costs about 4 cents per page and a full color print costs about 10.7 cents per page–both numbers are low for an inexpensive inkjet printer. The scan and copy features of this multifunctional printer are standard.

Compared to similarly priced inkjet multifunction, the HP Photosmart C5280 is a middle-of-the-pack performer with printing. It produced black text at a rate of 5.53 pages per minute. The color graphics print of this cheap printer is impressive, with smooth gradients, smooth color saturation, and sharp and detailed photo elements. The 4×6 photo print of C5280 is equally good: sharp details and pleasing and believable skin tones. The Photosmart C5280 did its best work with the color scan. Overall, the Photosmart C5280 is better with graphics and photos than at text.

What is claimed is:

1. An ink cartridge comprising: an ink cartridge body having a plurality of ink chambers, said ink chambers being formed by two or more partitioning walls intersecting orthogonally with one another within the ink cartridge body; a nose formed integral with the ink chambers, the nose including a plurality of openings formed in the opposite sides of the nose, respectively, and a plurality of ink feeding channels, wherein each of said plurality of ink feeding channels is individually connected to at least one of said plurality of ink chambers; and sealing members for individually sealing said openings; wherein the nose comprises: a part for mounting a print head; one or more ink passages intersecting with the print head; and a carriage mounting datum; wherein the carriage mounting datum is formed on the surfaces of the sealing members.

2. The ink cartridge according to claim 1, wherein said plurality of ink chambers comprise: a front ink chamber; and a rear ink chamber separated from the front ink chamber by a first partitioning wall, the rear ink chamber being divided into a left ink chamber and a right ink chamber, by a second partitioning wall, the left and right ink chambers being symmetrically formed.

3. The ink cartridge according to claim 2, wherein the front ink chamber and rear ink chamber have lengths with a ratio of 1:2.

4. The ink cartridge according to claim 2, wherein said plurality of ink feeding channels comprise: a front ink feeding channel formed in an extended part of the bottom of said front ink chamber in such a way that the front ink feeding channel intersects with the front ink chamber; and left and right ink feeding channels connected to the left and right ink chambers at predetermined locations in the bottoms thereof to intersect with the left and right ink chambers, respectively, the left and right ink feeding channels being separated from one another in the nose by the front ink feeding channel and formed by sealing the openings with at least one sealing member.

The control panel is simple for a printer with so many functions. The Pixma MP800R is ideal for small offices or homes with multiple PCs and users. A built-in 802.11g/b adapter of MP800R provides the option of wireless printing.

The Canon MP800R uses five ink cartridges: a dye-based black, a pigment-based black, and separate cyan, magenta, and yellow tanks. The cost per page of the MP800R is the same as that of the MP830: both black and color text prints will cost an inexpensive 2 cents per page.

The speed of Canon Pixma MP800R’s is quite impressive, especially when compared to an office all-in-one. It produced text at 7.97 pages per minute (ppm), scanned grayscale photos at 11.88ppm, scanned color photos at 10.75ppm, and printed 4×6 photos at 1.84ppm. The 4×6 photo prints showed good flesh tones, sharp detail, and only the slightest compression in the dark end of the grayscale. Colors scan show good detail and color representation. The grayscale scan was also good, though it also showed slight compression in the dark end of the grayscale, resulting in some detail loss in shadow areas.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to a method of normality decision with regard to an ink cartridge, which is detachably attached to a printing apparatus like an ink jet printer or an ink jet plotter, as well as to a printer that actualizes the method.

2. Description of the Related Art

The type of ink usable for a printer generally depends upon the type of the printer, such as the ink jet printer or the dot impact printer. Byway of example, it is assumed that a certain type of ink is usable for a specific printer. If another type of ink, which has different properties from those of the certain type of ink and is not generally used for the specific printer, is mistakenly attached to the specific printer, a desired printing result may not be obtained. In another example, the ink jet printer may encounter the troubles due to a difference in viscosity of ink, such as a poor printing result or clogging nozzles on a print head.

A proposed technique to solve this problem utilizes a first storage unit incorporated in an ink cartridge, in which identification data representing a type of the ink cartridge is stored, and a second storage unit incorporated in a printer main body, in which comparative data for the purpose of comparison are stored. The technique compares the identification data with the comparative data and determines whether both the data are coincident with each other. The printing process continues in the case where both the data are coincident with each other. When both the data are not coincident, on the contrary, the inconsistency is informed and the printing process is discontinued.

The identification data stored in the first storage unit of the ink cartridge may, however, be destroyed by the static electricity or another cause. An oxide layer formed at a contact between the storage unit in the printer main body and the ink cartridge or at a contact between the storage unit in the ink cartridge and the printer main body may cause a failure of electrical contact. In such cases, there is a fear of determining that the ink cartridge is abnormal or unsuitable, while the ink cartridge itself is actually normal and suitable.

The HP Image Zone utility, a combination photo archiver and photo-album designer, offers tools for editing and applying special effects. Pages can be scanned and converted to text using optical character recognition (OCR) software. HP also provides software for faxing documents from computer, though the 5610 can’t receive digital faxes and park them on the computer.

The Officejet 5610 contain standard-size black-ink cartridge and a tricolor cartridge. The standard-size black cartridge costs $18, and HP says that it will last 220 pages, or a steep 8.2 cents per page. A high-capacity black cartridge, good for an estimated 450 pages, costs $20, or a more palatable 4.4 cents per page.

The cheap HP Officejet 5610 prints text at a poky 4.08ppm pages per minute. The text obtained from the printer is sharp, clean, black, and legible at small point sizes. Color graphics showed good detail, shapes and geometry were free of distortion, and colors looked accurate and saturated. The glossy photo prints of HP Office jet 5610 had fine texture that even the ink dots can’t be identified under the magnification. The 5610 produced sharp details in photos.

This application claims the benefit under 35 U.S.C. .sctn.119(a) of Korean Patent Application No. 2004-07970 filed Feb. 6, 2004, in the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to an ink cartridge. In particular, the present invention relates to a color ink cartridge preferably using three colors, such as cyan, magenta and yellow, and having discrete ink feeding passages for the ink of respective colors.

2. Description of the Related Art

In general, an ink-jet printer prints out a desired image by spraying ink onto printing paper. The ink-jet printer is provided with an ink cartridge as a consumable article for storing a predetermined quantity of ink. Representative prior art examples of ink-jet printers have been disclosed in U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,926,195, 6,260,961 and 6,293,664, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.

FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing a part of a prior art ink cartridge is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 6,260,961. As shown, the ink cartridge comprises a body 70 and a plurality of ink compartments 84, 86, 88 defined in the body 70 by a plurality of partitioning walls 80, 82. The ink chambers 84, 86, 88 form individual flow channels via a plug 66 fitted into a slide insert opening 76a. A Tape Automated Bonding (TAB) circuit 204 with a plurality of cavities 202 is mounted onto the plug 66. With the ink cartridge constructed as described above, ink feeding channels for feeding ink from the individual ink chambers 84, 86, 88 into the cavities 202 provided in the TAB circuit 204 are integrally formed in the body 70. The ink feeding channels are individually formed in the ink chambers 84, 86, 88, respectively.

However, the ink cartridge as described above has a limited ink feeding capability because it is difficult to form cavities for feeding ink to the TAB circuit 204. The area of the ink feeding ports is reduced when a wall body is formed for attaching a filter (not shown) due to a narrow physical space for such an arrangement. As such, inks cannot be smoothly fed from the individual ink chambers 84, 86, 88 to the cavities 202 at the time of high-speed printing. Consequently, droplets of ink fed to a print head (not shown) via the cavities 202 become irregular, thereby deteriorating the quality of image.

In addition, in order to form the ink feeding channels, it is necessary to seal the opening 76a formed in the front face of the ink cartridge via the plug 66, the plug 66 may be installed on the rear surface of the TAB circuit 204. Therefore, upon failing to precisely adjust the height of the plug 66 when attaching the plug 66, the plug 66 protrudes causing interference between the TAB circuit 204 and plug 66. In such a case, the electrical connection to the ink cartridge 50 may be out of order, thereby disturbing the normal printing operation and reducing the reliability of the product.

Furthermore, because the plug 66 is required to seal at least two ink feeding channels, it is necessary to provide partitioning walls to define the individual ink feeding channels on the plug 66. As a result, there is problem in that the shape of the plug 66 becomes complicated, whereby manufacturing costs can be increased and leakage of inks and mixture of colors can be produced in the sealed portion.

The LaserJet 1020 is a mono printer and therefore contains only one toner cartridge. Replacement cartridges cost $70 and are good for up to about 2,000 prints, which come out to about 3.5 cents per page–not bad for a budget laser printer and in line with the Samsung ML-2571N’s 2.6 cents per page and the Lexmark E250d’s 3.8 cents per page. The recommended monthly duty cycle is 5,000 prints, so the LaserJet 1020 is best suited for home users with home users with light printing needs.

The HP LaserJet 1020′s speed and quality are not the best among its competition, but not terrible, either. It printed text at a rate of 12.52ppm (pages per minute) and graphics at a rate of 12.61ppm. The text quality of LaserJet 1020 is also excellent.

An ink cartridge for detachable mounting in an insertion direction on an ink jet printing apparatus having an ink supply needle communicating with a print head, includes a bottom wall, plural side walls, an ink supply port in the bottom wall to engage the ink supply needle as the ink cartridge moves in an insertion direction, a circuit board formed on a side wall adjacent to the bottom wall, and electrodes on the circuit board, each electrode having at least one contact region, the contact regions being divided into groups respectively arranged at intervals in the insertion direction. Part of one contact region located in a center of one of the groups of contact regions is disposed on the ink supply port’s central line, and a semiconductor storage device is located on the circuit board and is in electrical communication with at least some contact regions.

Color laser jet 2600n prints 8 pages per minute (ppm) for black text. Color graphics printed at a more reasonable 6.3ppm. That’s fast enough for most home offices, but not for any workgroup of more than a few people. In terms of print quality, plain text obtained from the printer cartridge is great with a crisp black that few colors lasers achieve, and sharp, clean letters, even at 2-point size. It also printed grayscale graphics well, with some blotchiness in areas but good detail, particularly on photos. A page of black text uses about 3 cents’ worth of toner and a lightly covered color page uses about 15.3 cents’ worth, according to vendor specs.

Protector for ink cartridge Abstract

A protector for use with an ink cartridge. The ink cartridge includes an ink chamber which stores an ink; an ink supply hole through which the ink is supplied from the ink chamber to an outside of the ink cartridge and which opens in a hole-open portion of an outer surface of the ink cartridge; and a valve member which is provided between the ink chamber and the ink supply hole, which selectively permits the ink to flow from the ink chamber to the ink supply hole and inhibits the ink from flowing from the ink chamber to the ink supply hole, and which communicates with the outside via the ink supply hole. The protector includes a main portion including an engaging portion which is adapted to engage a portion of the ink cartridge so that the protector is detachably attached to the ink cartridge. The main portion has a rigidity assuring that the main portion can substantially maintain an original shape thereof. The main portion further includes an access-restraining portion which is adapted to be located, in a state in which the protector is attached to the ink cartridge, outside the ink supply hole so as to at least partly cover the hole-open portion of the outer surface of the ink cartridge and thereby restrain an external access to the valve member via the ink supply hole.

The Pixma MX860 measures 18.1 inches wide by 16.2 inches deep by 7.8 inches tall. This printer has curved edges which make it attractive to be used at home and offices. This printer also contains the large 2.5-inch LCD screen which is fixed inside the control panel. The left side of the printer has buttons for copy, fax and scan while the left side of the printer contains the usual fare of menu, settings, numerical keys, and navigation buttons. The scanner bay of MX860 is hidden in the middle of the printer which contain five-ink cartridge bay that includes four dye-based inks in addition to a pigment-based ink for black text. According to Canon’s Web site, each color ink tank costs $12.99 for a replacement cartridge, while the pigment-based black tanks cost $14.90 each. Canon estimates a black-and-white document will cost $0.03, a full-color document $0.05, and $0.0529 per 4-inch-by-6-inch color photo; all average prices for today’s typical photo printer.

When it comes to print speeds, the Pixma MX860 has the upper hand on the competition, setting the pace in the color graphics speed, single-photo speed, grayscale scan, and black text copy speed tests. The MX860 is equally competent with graphics quality as it is with output speeds. The text prints came out a rich black with fully formed characters and thick lines, and the color spread retains its quality as well.

What is claimed is:

1. A combination of a protector and an ink cartridge, the ink cartridge comprising: an ink chamber which stores ink; an ink supply hole formed through the ink cartridge and through which ink flows from an interior of the ink chamber to an exterior of the ink cartridge and which opens in an opening portion of an outer surface of the ink cartridge; and a first valve member which is provided between the ink chamber and the ink supply hole, which selectively permits ink to flow from the ink chamber to the ink supply hole and inhibits ink from flowing from the ink chamber to the ink supply hole, and which communicates with the exterior of the ink cartridge via the ink supply hole, the protector comprising: a main portion comprising an engaging portion which is adapted to engage a portion of the ink cartridge, so that the protector is detachably attached to the ink cartridge, wherein the main portion is substantially rigid thereby assuring that the main portion substantially maintains an original shape thereof, wherein the main portion further comprises an access-restraining portion which is located outside the ink supply hole, when the protector is attached to the ink cartridge, so as to at least partially cover the opening portion of the outer surface of the ink cartridge and thereby limit external access to the first valve member via the ink supply hole, wherein the ink cartridge further comprises: an air introducing hole which introduces air from the exterior into the interior of the ink chamber; and a second valve member which is disposed between the ink chamber and the air introducing hole, which selectively permits air to flow from the exterior into the interior of the ink chamber and inhibits air from flowing from the exterior into the interior of the ink chamber, and which communicates with the exterior of the ink cartridge via the air introducing hole, and wherein the access-restraining portion covers the outer surface of the ink cartridge over the ink supply hole and the air introducing hole and thereby restrains the external access to each of the first and second valve members via a corresponding one of the ink supply hole and the air introducing hole.

2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein the engaging portion of the main portion is detachable from the ink cartridge when the ink cartridge is used with an ink jet recording device.

3. The combination according to claim 1, wherein the main portion is formed of a resin.

4. The combination according to claim 1, wherein the engaging portion is formed of an elastically deformable material, such that the engaging portion is elastically deformable during attachment and detachment of the protector to and from the ink cartridge, respectively.

5. The combination according to claim 1, wherein the protector further comprises an operable portion which is integral with the main portion and which is operable to detach the protector from the ink cartridge.

The Canon Pixma MP980 measures 7.9 inches high by 18.5 inches wide by 15.2 inches deep. The all-in-one weighs a hefty 24 pounds because of the auto-duplexer built into the back for double-sided prints. Canon MP980 uses six individual Chroma Life 100 ink cartridges including one dedicated gray cartridge for better quality monochrome photos. All of the dye-based color inks cost $12.99 to replace, and the pigment-based black tanks run a bit more at $14.90. Canon estimates a black-and-white document to cost 3 cents, a full-color document costs 5 cents, and it costs 29 cents per 4-inch-by-6-inch color photo; these prices are average for today’s typical photo printer. The scanner of the printer also supports document sizes up to 8.5 inches by 11 inches, but the fixed hinge makes it difficult to stretch the scanner cover over thicker documents and books.

The cheap Canon Pixma MP980 offers a collection of features that make life much easier for the home photo enthusiast. This printer can be connected to the computer through a standard USB cord and to the network with the Ethernet port on the back, or even go wireless with the built-in 802.11b/g wireless print server.

The text print speed of cheap Canon Pixma MP980 is fairly good. It prints about 5.75 pages per minute. Compared with the rest of the competition, though, the MP980 fared about average.

What is claimed is:

1. An ink cartridge for detachable mounting in an insertion direction on an ink jet printing apparatus having an ink supply needle communicating with a print head, the ink cartridge comprising: a bottom wall; a plurality of side walls; an ink supply port formed in said bottom wall to engage the ink supply needle of the ink jet printing apparatus as the ink cartridge moves in the insertion direction; a circuit board formed on one of said side walls adjacent to said bottom wall; a plurality of electrodes disposed on the circuit board, each said electrode having at least one contact region, the contact regions being divided into a plurality of groups respectively arranged at intervals in the insertion direction of the cartridge, wherein a portion of one said contact region that is located in a center of one of the groups of contact regions is disposed on a central line of said ink supply port; and a semiconductor storage device located on said circuit board and which is in electrical communication with at least some of said contact regions.

2. An ink cartridge according to claim 1, wherein the electrodes are divided into a plurality of groups respectively arranged at intervals in the insertion direction of the cartridge, and wherein one said electrode that is located in a center of one of the groups is disposed on a central line of said ink supply port.

3. An ink cartridge according to claim 1, wherein the printing apparatus has a plurality of ink supply needles communicating with the print head, the ink cartridge comprises a plurality of ink supply ports formed in said bottom wall to engage respectively the ink supply needles of the ink jet printing apparatus as the ink cartridge moves in the insertion direction, wherein one said contact region is disposed on a central line of a particular said ink supply port.

4. The ink cartridge according to claim 1, wherein the ink jet printing apparatus has a plurality of contact forming members, and said contact regions are areas of said electrodes corresponding in position to the contact forming members of the printing apparatus.

5. The ink cartridge according to claim 3, wherein the electrodes are arranged in a plurality of groups respectively arranged at intervals in the insertion direction of the cartridge, and wherein one said electrode that is located in a center of one of the groups is disposed on a central line of a particular said ink supply port.

6. The ink cartridge according to claim 1, further comprising an overhang portion located on the side wall on which the circuit board is formed.

7. The ink cartridge according to claim 6, wherein the overhang portion is located at an upper part of at least one said side wall.

8. The ink cartridge according to claim 6, wherein the overhang portion has a lower part for cooperating with a lever of the ink jet printing apparatus.

9. The ink cartridge according to claim 8, further comprising a rib located between the lower part of the overhang portion and said side wall on which the overhang portion is formed.
